What is an Assessment and Why Would it be Required?
An assessment is an investigation into possible reasons someone may be experiencing challenges. Assessment provides information as to areas of strengths and needs; possible explanation for difficulties/challenges; and practical recommendations for managing challenges at home, school, or the workplace.
If you or your child experience any of the following, an assessment may be warranted:
-
Unexplained academic or occupational challenges
-
Challenging behaviour
-
Difficulties regulating emotions
-
Problems with social skills
-
Problems with planning, impulse control, organization, memory, task initiation and/completion.

BACKGROUND
I began my career working with students with disabilities at the K-12 and postsecondary level. My areas of focus were educational and psychological assessments, providing remediation, and determining reasonable and appropriate accommodations for educational settings.
Although my roles did not initially include providing counselling or therapy services for the students and families I was working with, it was very clear that such services were required. It was this realization that led me to start my own business.
I have now operated my own business, off and on, performing dual roles (private and public; education and counselling) for the better part of 20 years. Throughout this time I have continued to update and increase my knowledge, skills, and abilities, and completed my Ph.D. in February of 2021.
My approach is grounded in the belief that perceptions precipitate behaviour. Facilitating an individual's ability to change the way they think about different situations allows for the development of an individual's conceptualization of unwanted or unhelpful behaviours and how these behaviours can be changed. I utilize both humanistic and cognitive approaches and believe in an inclusive, non-judgmental environment wherein you will be treated with care, compassion, and respect. Without wellness there is no learning.
I am trained in CBT, DBT, RET, Brief Counselling, and Solution Focused Counselling and always utilize positive psychology techniques.
I am a proud single mom of a university graduate, and I have personally dealt with ADHD, treatment resistant depression, and anxiety, for most of my life.
